Augmented reality with 3d tracking of a real object for Polymedia

From 2 to 5 December 2014, the 20th International Exhibition «Telecommunications and Information Technologies» Bakutel was held at the Baku Expo Center in Azerbaijan. Polymedia, leader of the Russian market of information display systems, took an active part in the exhibition. An augmented reality application «Oil derrick» was developed especially for the company's stand.

Application is unique in that it uses 3D tracking technology, when the marker for augmented reality is not a flat image, but a real object. On the stand, there was a 3D printed physical model of an oil production platform 60 cm high. Based on the digitized model, a 3d marker was created, which was later used for augmented reality application.

Application is based on the SLAM technology (simultaneous localization and mapping). This technology allows you to determine from what angle user looks at the object. The space around the «oil derrick» is divided into 8 sectors; each sector displays its own virtual scene with infographics. Depending on the angle, a particular sector is displayed to the user. Moving around the model of the oil production platform, user observes animated 3d scenes replacing each other on the tablet screen; a helicopter circling around the tower, an approaching tanker.

Application introduces users to the history of oil production in Azerbaijan, tells about the current state of the industry. Explains the structure of the oil platform and its size.

Application runs on Android and iOS.
